Turkish Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) announced that five companies received the request for proposal for the power package of Altay Main Battle Tank. BMC Automotive Industry And Trading Inc., FİGES Engineering Inc. İstanbul Ship Building Industry And Trade Inc. TUSAŞ Engine Industry Corporation (TEI), TÜMOSAN Motor And Tractor Industry Joint Stock Company.
In ALTAY tank developed by OTOKAR, German MTU’s diesel engine and German company’s RENK transmission were used during the development phase. “We see that we will not have an engine problem when ALTAY Tank serial production starts” Turkish Defense Industries Undersecretary İsmail Demir says in response to worries about potential disruptions in the mass production phase. For the ALTAY Tank, Ukrainian and British companies also submitted various engine and transmission recommendations.
The final product aims to remove the Altay tank’s foreign dependency on the powertrain, developing a powertrain that is not subject to an export license. Previously, in the 2017-2021 Strategic Plan published by the SSM, the primary date for the first Altay tank to enter service was set for 2020.
