Lieutenant Arif Ekmekçi Logistic Support Ship (A-575), built at the Selah Shipyard within the scope of the needs of the Turkish Naval Forces Command, was launched by a ceremony held in Tuzla.
During the ceremony, Defense Minister Fikri Işık said that Turkey aims to increase domestic contribution in defense sector over 80 percent by 2023.
Admiral Bülent Bostanoğlu, Commander of the Turkish Naval Forces, said in his speech that “The campaign launched with the slogan Build Your Own Ship by the Naval Society established in 1965 has opened the way for our National Defense Industry to design and build its own ships in their own shipyards. Today, navies that design and build ships can be respected, effective, deterrent and permanent. ”
The ceremony was held by relatives, especially the mother of Lieutenant Ekmekçi, who was given the name of the ship and died in 1993 during the departure trainins from the submarine.
Having 106,51 meters in length, 16,80 meters in width and 6150 tons of fuel handling capacity and a helicopter platform, the ship can speed up to 12 knots. The ship is scheduled to be delivered to the Naval Forces Command in 2018
